This year the Faculty of Music at McGill University celebrates its centenary. Part of the celebrations include a commission from Professor Brian Cherney, as well as a performance of his violin concerto by the renown Jonathan Crow, a former student of the faculty who currently serves as concert master with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. And representing the youngest generation is doctoral candidate Nicolas Gilbert, a young intellectual polyglot and talented composer. The music of Dutilleux rounds out the whole, with a work that is as refined as it is highly personal, and which consistently meets with unanimous approval. The whole falls under the direction of Alexis Hauser, who wields a masterful hand in leading one of the most dynamic student orchestras in all of Canada.
This concert is recorded by CBC Radio and will air on CBC Radio Two (93,5 FM in Montréal) on the following programs: Two New Hours (Sundays at 10pm with host Larry Lake), In Performance (Mondays to Thursdays at 8pm with host Andrew Craig), Studio Parks (Weekdays at 12pm with host Eric Friesen) et Quebec in Concerts (Sundays at 12pm with host Kelly Rice). Parts of this concert may also be heard in more than 50 countries in the European Broadcasting Union.
